Baby Food Isn’t Poisoning Our Kids
The recent news that most baby foods contain heavy metals sounds scary. But is it really? Time for a reality check.
Having a baby is, by all accounts, a pretty terrifying experience. From the chaos of learning how to take care of yourself — which, as we can all attest, takes decades to master — you suddenly have to take charge of another tiny person who is even more helpless than you.
No wonder new parents are often overwhelmed.
And being a parent got even more terrifying last month. Headlines from the United States across the globe reported that “95% of baby foods… contain toxic (heavy) metals,” with everyone from CNN to the Daily Mail joining the chorus of fear. Now, it appears that Senator Chuck Schumer has used the media noise to call for an urgent review of the report and baby food in general. Not exactly what you want to hear if you’re feeding your squalling 10-month-old from a jar of carrot and pumpkin puree, I’d guess.
Fortunately, for everyone who’s been scared silly by the headlines, the reality is a lot less fearful than the media has suggested.
Baby food probably isn’t poisoning your kids.
