How to Deal With Your Election Stress
You might be feeling anxious right about now. Perhaps you’re not sure what to do with the stress? Writer Susan Orlean is reading polls, donating, and doing any activity “that serves to feel active and nothing more.” There are also small ways to deal with stress that are incredibly basic but science-backed. Boston University mental health experts share a few such tips for how to cope with election-related stress and anxiety.
One tip includes recognizing and focusing on the things you can control, like getting enough sleep (or at least trying to sleep), eating healthy food, and doing some physical activity. Also keep in mind that constant worry isn’t doing you any favors (though not worrying is easier said than done). “Rather than ruminating about the future, people can take time to bring their thoughts to the present moment and appreciate family and friends,” suggests John Otis, PhD, director of the Behavioral Medicine Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders.
