Have you ever wondered what’s going on in your personal trainer’s head while you’re working out? Are you afraid they think you’re fat, weak, or lazy?

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Regardless of how vulnerable or nervous you feel sweating in front of me, I’m never silently thinking you look like a terrifically wet cat. I’m absolutely not making value judgments about the type of person you are, and I certainly do not harbor negative opinions about you.

As I see it, it’s completely necessary for me to hold you in unconditional positive regard. That means I support you regardless of what you say or do (or how you look). Here’s what actually rolls around in my head while you’re working out.

1. I don’t care if you’re sweaty.

Listen, not one single fitness coach worth their salt cares if you sweat profusely or get red-faced. If I had a dollar for every sweaty fist bump I’ve actively sought from an exhausted client, I could afford a month-long vacation in Switzerland. (Not to mention that if I judged you for perspiring, I’d be quite the hypocrite. I look like a damp tomato when I exercise.) A little salt-water on your hands…
