10 Simple Eating Suggestions

New guidelines encourage eating patterns that promote health and longevity

The smorgasbord of nutritional advice cooked up by governments, institutions, and supposed diet gurus would suggest we all need to eat differently as we get older and focus exclusively on superfoods or brain foods or high fat (or low fat!) in order to slash weight, feel better, and eat our way to mental brilliance and physical immortality.

In reality, this glut of diet advice is often conflicting, frustratingly TMI, sometimes outright lousy, and sure to spur some serious food fights.

When I reported on new food rankings that tried to show the exact foods we should lean into or avoid, the specificity caused as much confusion for some people as it cleared up for others, generating sharp and well-deserved criticism in the comments section. When I wrote about the potential dangers of a keto diet, which may be helpful when properly designed for certain individuals but is ill-advised for most people, some folks raked me over the cancer-causing coals for daring to suggest this restrictive diet is anything but awesome.

So I’m glad to see new eating suggestions from the American Heart Association, 10 simple pointers developed by 10 experts in nutrition and medicine…
