In a remarkably housebound time, it’s bizarre to think your feet might be hurting more than usual — but there are stirrings to suggest just that. All this shoeless shuffling from the kitchen to the living room may be leaving ligaments and tendons previously accustomed to structured support a bit more prone to stress and injury.

And though you aren’t venturing far and wide, hopefully you’re all still walking (and running if so inclined) a good amount these days. So your feet certainly deserve extra love as you lean on them to keep on keeping on through this pandemic. Fortunately, feet are remarkably easy to spoil: a hot soak and a good rub can go a long way.

Here’s a little self-care routine to try tonight. After a shower or bath, find a comfortable seat alongside some nourishing body oil or lotion and a pair of socks. Take five minutes to rub the product deep into your skin, making sure to really massage each heel, ball of the foot, arch, ankle, and toe. Then put on the socks — their job is to lock in the moisture and warmth you’ve just created. Retire to a cozy spot and elevate your feet to boost circulation.

If the socks don’t drive you crazy, try sleeping in them to give your skin an overnight moisture boost. Peel ’em off in the morning, notice the difference, and consider giving the foot love to your partner, child, or friend next. After all, skin hunger for oft-neglected feet is a real thing (especially in a time of isolation).
